SWEAT

DESCRIPTION Every person has two to four million sweat glands. There are two types of sweat glands. Eccrine glands are distributed all over the skin. They secrete a fluid made up of 99 percent water as well as electrolytes and acids. Apocrine glands are found in the armpits and genital region. They secrete a fluid with proteins and lipids. These glands develop during puberty and are responsible for an unpleasant side effect of sweating: body odor.

Sweating fulfills many functions for the body. The most important is the regulation of body temperature in hot weather or during vigorous physical activity.

TIP If you are sweating a lot, you should drink a lot of room-temperature beverages that are low in calories. Ice-cold drinks can cause more profuse sweating.
